• This breed has been around for many years • Derived from Quarter Horses who did not meet the original American Quarter Horse Association's minimum height requirements of 14.2 hands high • The height requirement was phased out, but the Quarter Pony continued to evolve into a very popular breed • Pony is a horse of either sex and any age that doesn't exceed 14.2 hands high • Pony is from Latin pullus meaning foal and pullanus meaning colt...which in old French became poulain and poulenet (pronounced pool-ney) • In Scotland circa 1700, pool-ney became modified to powney (pronounced poo-ney) • Eventually poo-ney became pony • Many International Quarter Ponies are foundation bred Quarter Horses • Most International Quarter Ponies are approximately 13.2 hands high (800-900 pounds), however breeders are beginning to raise them in excess of 1,100 pounds and 13.2 - 14 hands high • This pony has a short broad head, small ears, wide set, kind eyes and sensitive nostrils. The mouth is firm and the jaw is well developed • The neck is slightly arched and the withers are medium high and sharp • Deep, broad chest and heavy forelegs with sSmooth joints and short cannons • A pony of calm disposition and even temperament • Colours: Various colors and color patterns, as well as solid colors • Height: 11.2 - 14.2 hands high Popular Uses: Childs mount, riding and bull dogging
