I have three questions 1. My pony is 12hh at 2years old, he will be 3 at the beginning of next year, how big will he get? He is quite bumhigh. 2. Same pony, is very fat .. he's been broken and is being ridden around 5 times a week, in the school doing a bit of jumping and walking out on the roads. I want to get him fitter as after 10minutes of being ridden he's puffing and starting to get sweaty. He's got quite a thick coat but lives out so dont want to clip him. Can anyone give me some ideas on how to get him fitter? 3. What breed do people think he is? I think he might be Welsh A x New Forest, but it doesnt say on his passport. Ill try to post some pics for everyone to see |

hi, 2 is quite early to have him broken and especially doing hard work like jumping and going out on hard roads as ponies are still growing as 2 year olds. Maybe some lunging to help with the fitness but bring it in slowly and dont expect too much from him as hes still quite young. Do you give him any hard feed or extra hay? You could limit his grazing with a grazing muzzle etc. don't know about the breeding but there might be some connemara in there hope this helps x |

| p.s it depends on the height of his parents and on the actual pony because some can keep growing until 5 years old but I would have a guess at maybe 13.2 -14.2 hh |

Whoa! Im sorry but a two year old should never have seen a saddle! They're bone structure is too weak and you will cause him some major health and joint issues when he's slightly older. You have a recipe for arthritis right there! Even lunging is to much for a two year old. This pony needs to be turned away for a year and bringing back into work as a 3.5yr old. By which time hopefully he will have stopped growing and made a height you would like. Dont listen to anyone who tells you its acceptable to ride or lunge a 2 year old, it isn't. Im sure you were told it was fine but please leave him for a while. let him grow up and finish growing then enjoy him properly. He's very nice and could be highland X in which case they are very stocky so he may not be that overweight. He does look lik he could lose a few pounds but he's goin into winter and if he's not in work he just doesn't need extra feed, he will be fine. |

Okay... i dont own this pony, i have him on loan, so its not really up to me about when he was broken in etc. He was turned away for a while but he wasnt himself anymore and as soon as he was brought back into work he was happier and back to his old self. He only gets ridden for a maximum of half an hour, most of the time not even that, and he doesnt do a lot of jumping, only occasionally, but we do go for walks quite often. I have no idea about the height of his parents, and its definatly fat! although he has quite thick legs his neck is huge and so is the belly, ill post a recent pic of him as that one was a month or so ago .. thanks for the advice though.

yeh he is fat like you said but looks stockier then a welshy so i would stick with a highland breed to me, nice fella. The owner should be far more responsible and never allow her pony to be touched untill he was three, its not your fault but it should never have happened, he is far to young and he will have severe medical issues. it is completly irresponsible in my opinion and then to loan him out after is even worse! im sorry you have been put in this situation and i wish you the best in fittening up but i really dont hold this owner in high regards at all. It is like asking a puppy to work a dog sleigh, they are neither physically or mentally ready no matter how willing they are. |

I personally would try and look for another pony to loan i am afraid. As much as you may love him, the owner is not the type of owner i would i myself would like to be loaning from. No way should he be doing any jumping at all, and shouldnt be ridden on a regular basis - definatley not 5 times a week. him being broken in at such a young age will cause him health problems in some shape of form in latter years - will the owner blame you for riding him so much at this age? even if they are ok with it now? Is he definatley only 2 years old? Can you get an experienced horseperson to look at his teeth? could the wrong age have been put on the passport? he does look nice though |

the owner is my friend and she only broke him in because her best friend told her it was fine to, well thats what i think. i am thinking of cutting down his riding and taking him for walks inhand instead as he enjoys that too, not just being worked, he enjoys just doing something rather than being stuck in a field. his owner definatly wont blame me for any problems that might happen later on as she is asking me to ride him and stuff, and if i dont then she would or she'd find someone else to loan him instead so in my opinion its best for him if i loan him and ride him gently and ttake him for walks. im pretty sure he is 2, i work with racehorses and see their teeth all the time when theyre trying to bite me! :P and looking at his teeth they look the same as the 2yr old racers. i dont know his exact date of birth as it only says 1/1/2007 on his passport so he should be 3 soon. |
