A saddle goes on what seat your are as you do not what a saddle that is to big for your seat or you will move about like you do not what a saddle that is to small you will get a num burm and hurt your horses back

each saddle has to be fitted to each individual horse. A difference of an inch in the wrong direction will cause huge amount of pain for the horse and lead to dangerous behaviour in the most placid of horses.

What type of horse is it?

generally, a TB type horse around 15hh can have a 17" saddle assuming that thats a a good seat for you…if the horse is a long framed type, they can take lager seats, a shorter framed horse however and the cantle will sit right over the kidney and spine, causing discomfort.

however, its important the the tree is correct. Too narrow and it will sit to high and pinch the whithers, causing hollowing and shoulder pain. Too wide and the tree will sit directly on bone, causing open woulds and whither damage. the tree also has to sit comfortably on either side of the spine all the way down, leaving plenty of space yet making contact on muscle the whole way or it will tip and shift.

And discomfort will prevent the horse engaging the hind quarters, work correctly from behind and will eventually lead to behavioural issues, usually bucking, napping or rearing to try and eleviate their discomfort or remove the saddle, they cant be punished for this and it can take a long time for them to recover….

Another consideration is when you have the saddle fitted…horses put on wieght and lose weight. If you fit the horse when they are underdeveloped, the saddle will constrict further developing, not allowing space for muscles to develop. If you fit when the horse is to fat, then the saddle will be too wide when the horse tones up and again cause severe discomfort.

The best option is to get an experienced horse person who deals with several horses throughout a year, either a good dealer but preferably a good saddler. If the horse is underdeveloped then a slightly wider saddle with correct padding will allow for development, otherwise, you can get adjustable saddle that you can change as the horse does but that doesn't mean a perfect fit so you will still need someone to double check it for you every 6 months at least….

Saddles and teeth are the biggest causes for misbehaviour in horses. These thing being neglected is the reason hundreds of horses are abused, abandoned or sent to slaughter as people didn't take the time to make sure the horse wasn't in pain first.

Im happy to answer any questions you may have at all…

Well, when you can, get your local saddler to come and have a look at him. If your on a very tight budget, then wintecs would be a good choice but make sure they're padded well.

If you have slightly more which would be better, he will be able to bring out second hand leather saddles with him and see which is the best fit.

That will be the best option for you and the horse….

I see from your other advert that you do not have the horse yet, if you are lucky and get one it may come with tack, its worth asking the seller if that is the case or they might sell you the saddle to go with the horse.

By the sounds of things you are inexperienced in which case you will need the saddle to be fitted by someone who knows what they are doing...local saddlers usually offer a saddle fitting service. As Sasca so rightly pointed out, if you use an ill fitting saddle it can do untold damage to the horse maybe to the extent of making it un-ridable so you can see the importance of getting an expert to fit the saddle to the horse.

Good luck with your search, youre brave taking on a horse in todays economic climate, they are very expensive to maintain!!

im sorry but there is no way you can learn to fit a saddle without experience of poor saddles and good saddles on at least 20 differently shaped horses. Its not possible!

There are too many variations for an unexperienced person to get right. It cannot be done and having a wrong saddle will lead to a LOT of PAIN for your horse! please trust me on this and get someone to fit the saddle!

The fact that you asked what size saddle an unknown horse needs demonstrates how you really cant fit a saddle. I dont want to critisizer and i will help in any way i can but this is the most important piece of equipment you will ever own and it will make or break your horse!

Well, if he is going to help you fit then thats great. Thats all that important is that someone can make sure it doesn't pinch or sit wrongly.

As for seat size your looking at roughly a 16-17inch.

Good luck and let us know how your search goes...
