| I'm looking to purchase/rescue chipmunks I have a large aviary empty and waiting. I don't seem able to locate breeders or dealers on internet and no luck at three different pet shops.I would also like to know what books to buy on keeping and looking after these lovely animals. I posted a few days ago on wrong thread so hoping to get response here |

| Thanks for the information it gives me a start. Had same problem some years ago when I started looking for ornamental ducks. Eventually I found them and now know several places that specialize in them and my own have started to breed this year. |

| i would not advise buying animals from a pet shop, they are usually back to back bred on rodent farms etc with no thought for health or temperament |

| Jacky is right but i do know of some shops which stock good animals from very good breeders. You need to talk to the shop and find out where they are bred and see what you can find out about them if you choose to get them from a shop. an individual breeder or rescue would be better though. |

i dont know of any GOOD breeder that would supply a pet shop, how can you keep records and check on health and temperament if they have sold from a pet shop? Keep looking for a good breeder it will be worth the wait, or try some rescues |

| Thanks for all your comments, keep it peaceful, and I agree good breeders don't usually supply pet shops as they normally have other contacts. I believe this is for all animals. This does not solve my problem though, where are the breeders?? I do know that if I can't find a breeder I will definitely get at a pet shop, if I find one that sells them. What ever the outcome I do know they will come to a very good home and will be well looked after. |

i have found one breeder, might be worth a call as they may know of other breeders, although i did see on one site that the usual breeding times are spring and autumn http://www.chipmunkery.co.uk/ |

| Thanks Jacky for web site. Will contact them tomorrow. My granddaughter was talking to a friend at school and her friends dad has some in garden aviary somewhere close to me, bless her, which I'm waiting for telephone number. He doesn't advertise but sells them to friends. I honestly thought breeding time was spring but the young are in the nest now and are still too young to leave. I also will have the problem of inter-breeding so will need at least 2 contacts to get male and females. I've seen in the past what can happen with rabbits, heart breaking. |
