i had my hamster at the vets on saturday as he was bleeding from his back passage.
the vet prescribed baytril 2.5, 10 ml in approx 20 ml of water each day.
the vet said if he hasn't stopped bleeding then bring him back in a week's time.
harvey hasn't bled since saturday morning, however,last night his entire rectal area swelled up into a round lump.
unsure whether to take him back to the vets or to finish his course of medicine first, then take him back if there's no improvement.
would be very grateful for any helpful advice on this.

thanks crazykid...asked my vet while i was getting my pup his 2nd jag today.
he reckons its either an abcess or tumour...
if its not went away by the time the med's finished i've to take him back. |

| I would not recommend putting baytril in hammys water. Baytril tastes foul and there is a good chance that hammy wont drink his water. Try mixing it into malt paste or choc spread. |

you do know that chocolate is poisonous to hamsters (same as dogs) ?
that's why you get special choc drops that have been specially formulated for hamsters lol
thanks for the tips ... he seems to be drinking the water ok so far though.
i'll bear it in mind though just in case. |

| do you know how little actual chocolate there is in choc spread - a tiny amount would not hurt. Chocolate is poisonous to all mammals, its just that we humans digest it better than most |

oh for goodness sake grow up, i never said poison it, you are just trying to make an argument where there isn't one.
How do you know that your hamster has had one entire dose of baytril if it is diluted in water before you add another dose? Baytril is extremely bitter (if you don't believe me taste it, it wont poison you). I usually give it to the rats on the rare occasion that they need it either in a small dot of choc spread or yogurt or something sweet. A ball of malt paste works well top. |

also, scotland, cheers for the tip... if harvey decides not to drink his water i'll bear it in mind...
jacky, forgot to say, i know harvey's getting a full dose of his med as it's only mixed with a tiny bit of water.
once thats been drunk, the bottle is refilled with plain water.
the next day, the water is emptied out, and the new med mix is put in, and so on.
i appreciate your advice jacky, and i did thank you for it.you've just picked me up wrong, thats all.
i apologise, as i wouldn't have made a joke if i realised you didn't know what one was. |

Its better if baytrill is given in yougart or somethin like it & you know that wee hammy has taken it all & not in water. I dont persoanly recomend giving in water as I would want to see it taken theere & then.
Best get another visit to the vets & dont leave it |

when i got the pup his jag the other day i asked the vet and he said i've to bring him back when the med's finished (monday) if there's no improvement.

| strange... last night the lump was gone... then in the early hours (approx 4 am) it was back...now i don't know if its still there or not as harveys sleeping and i don't want to disturb him as he's not been well... what the heck do i do, vets or not? |

i personally would go back to the vets as nothin is 100% sorted in what your saying ...i dont know how good your vet is on small furries as some vets are still no that good with anything smaller then a guineapig.
how is he on eating & drinking & BEING ACTIVE? |

| Does he open his bowels properly when the 'lump' is there? The reason i ask is sometimes baytril can cause the runs which may have meant his bowels were 'free flowing', now he is off his meds he could be constipated and the lump could be impacted faeces............just a thought |

as far as i'm aware, my vet's not bad with the little 'uns.
i doubt the lump is impacted faeces, as he is still doing his business normally, as he has done throughout.
the vet reckoned it was either an abcess or tumour.
(if it went away after med, abcess, if not, possibly tumour)
but seeing as it keeps coming and going i'm unsure.

| maybe, but it was only a weeks course consisting of 1 ml of baytril in 10 ml of water, and the course finished on sunday night...could still be in his system though, i suppose. |

Why are you needing to be rehomed anyway....you have ahome & if you are at risk theres emergency accommodation available......a cell at the station you work at...............you are after all a cop. When my cousin's hamster got sick, she had Baytrill too.
She hated it in water so my cousin used it in yogurt. Mixing it in with a little bit of unseasoned, plain scrambled egg (Hammies ARE allowed that, check on hamster fact sites)is also a good idea, though don't use the scrambled egg too much, you might end up with a hammie with an upset stomach. |

i had to give the medacine to my hamster and i just squirted it staight in the mouth as that way you know it has defenatly had it and no chance that it not taking it. yes its foul but that way u know it has been taken lol
after giving medacine just give a bit of broclie or something so hamster doesnt asosiate you with medacine cause then it will stop coming to you lol |
