HELP NEEDED Last week I found that my gerbil had had 5 babies. I dont know how old they are but they are walking, have full fur but their eyes are not open. The reason I need help is because last night the mother died. I have put them into a small box with bedding and have been putting a warm wheat bag underneath the box for warmth. I read on another site that they could be fed baby formula which luckily I had in the house. I have been trying to get milk into them with a syringe. I don't have a clue what to do with them and so far have not been able to get any help. My local Blue Cross didn't want them, the vets couldn't help and the RSPCA last night was an answermachine. I really need to know whether to continue what I am doing or whether I am prolonging their life when they are too small to survive. Any help would be very gratefully received and I would especially like to know if anyone knows of an organisation maybe that would take them for me. I live in Carterton which is near Oxford/Swindon. Please help asap.... |

| They are at an age that they should be able to take in solids. Only warm half of the box/cage as if it is too hot for them, they have the option of moving to the other side. Make sure you are still feeding them milk round the clock (every 4 hours) until you are absolutely sure they are eating solids. I heard that kitten formula is better for them. If you are having difficulty in syringe feeding them, straighten out your finger, put a drop of milk on your finger knuckle (wrinkly bit) and place the baby (belly down) on your finger with their mouths on the finger knuckle. The wrinkles resemble nipples to them and often they will feed this way. Make sure you always have normal gerbil food for them, and break them up if you can into really tiny bits. I take in any baby rodents that need to be hand fed but I am in London. Look up your local rodent rescue, often they will come to your house to collect if they will take them. I hope they survive. Good luck, but dont be disheartened if they dont make it. |
