Duchess - a sad 3 year old St. Bernard female.

Dumped to walk the streets of the city - and picked up by the dog wardens. Chipped - but her owners didn't want her anymore. She was sold on from then, to 'who knows where'.

Anyway - there this sad girl stayed - in a council dog pound to wait her fate. With infected and sore weeping eyes - dirty and covered with muck - who could afford to take on a dog with a dubious background and a bad temper. Anyone who approached Duchess got a growl. Little did they know the agony this girl was going through with her infected eyes. The shape of the skin hanging over her head - without fat or muscle to hold it up - with big sore infected Cherry Eyes - Duchess couldn't even see who was coming near her cage.

She could smell the fear and the stress in the pound - what was going to happen to her? Best growl and keep people away.

Sadly - very few people will take on a dog from a pound - even fewer will take on one with a suspect temperament and a possible vet bill.

The small charity Rain Rescue was approached to see if they would help with vet fees - so that she would be free from pain and be adoptable again. Rain Rescue said they would find the money somehow. Please get her out to safety and so a small voluntary group called Animal Haven took her out.

So - here's Duchess - within 2 days of coming out of the pound - she went down with terrible kennel cough - so bad the blood was coming out of her nose every time she sneezed. With heavy dogs like this - this can go to pneumonia and they can quickly die. Vet treatment was urgently needed and provided. The vets examined her eyes, and said that both were bad - and that she needed a specialist eye vet to do the operation. Peak Vets in Sheffield were approached as Greg is a specialist. They offered us a 25% discount and said they will do the operation once she is well enough to go under anaesthetic. So now she waits - still in pain and discomfort - but the infection has now gone - and she knows her kennel handlers - she knows she isn't in a stressful situation - and so she' fine.

We are now looking to raise funds to go towards Duchess's vet bills which will be around £600. Rain Rescue are a registered charity and constantly help dogs in a crisis situation and raise funds to help with vet fees that smaller groups couldn't afford - this way we feel we are helping as many as possible.

Please see if you can be a part of Duchess's recovery.

Donations can be made by the website using Charity Choice and ticking Gift Aid if you are a U.K. Tax Payer - or cheques can be sent made out to Rain Rescue - please email and I can forward an address to send the cheques to. All our accounts are audited by a chartered accountant and all cheques are signed by 2 Trustees.

Thank you for reading Duchess's story.
