Hi, little dogs are always on average slower to learn the basics of house training...u need a consistant routine, and like u have menioned yourself u need to restrict his space then gradually icrease as u see an improvemet........so start by keeping him the the same room as u at all times when u are in, don't allow him to roam off into another room, this way when he squats for a motion or lifts his leg, instad of letting him carry out the motion, lift him up immediately and say NO and place him out in the garden and close the door, this way u are breaking the habit and guiding him to the correct wee wee area, when he does go in the garden, watch him from the window as not to distract him, and give him a command "go wee wee" when u put him out, when he is nearing the end of the motion go out and treat him, no fuss sut slip him a treat, and at the same time when u catch him in the house and u remove him to the garden use the same command "go wee wee"
When u are out or not able to supervise use the crate, use the smallest u can get away with, feed him his main meal early morning if he can not hold during the night.
Pop him out to the garden frequently and randonly through the day, on a morning always after meals or when u arrive back from being out(never fuss him when u get home the greeting can wait), just release from crate and carry him to the garden and use your command and to start with carry him out if need be, esp if he is more likely to become way laid and wonder off to another part of the house.
I also would not recommend training pads, it jsut slows the process.
I would also castrate.

Thanks for your help, will look into other training classes. Maybe I could suggest taking him along and giving him a chance!

your right about the puppy pads, i wouldnt ever go down that route either.

i totally understand. my current foster dog was exactly the same - despite being castrated he felt he ruled the roost. i started out with a crate and now he gets left in the kitchen and he doesnt get free reign of the house at any time.

i would find a new training class if i were you - get him out there in reward based training. it certainly wont do your situation indoors any harm.

we really have tried that. I really praise him when he goes outside, I dont say a word when he has done it, i simply clear it up... but still it continues. I wouldnt tell him off as he has always been a nervous dog. He wasnt socialised under 4months, before we got him. Puppy/dog classes have advised not to take him, as they say it will do more harm than good?! I have spoken to the vets about whether its a teritorial thing and they say neutering him may help, but may not. We will prob try as we are so fed up clearing up after him all the time! We are willing to try anything. He is with another fully house trained dog. Its like its not the odd accident, he goes where he wants... and right in front of us! My idea was to start with the crate and then increase his floor space gradually and room by room... but he even poos in his bed!! I just dont know where to go if neutering him doesnt work. I cant put him outside whilst we pop out as hes a chihuahua cross and would feel the cold too much. I dont want to puppy-pad train him, as I think it is simply encouraging him to wee in the house.

when you do clean it up make sure you dont use an ammonia based cleaner like bleach (or anything containing bleach) as this will landmark the piddle site to your dog - basically saying pee here, pee here.

go right back to the start - think puppy. let him out and hugely praise him when he goes in the right place. when he goes indoors dont say anything - dont even look at him. just clean it up and walk away. if you keep this clear cut then he will get the idea.

when you do go out then at least restricting him to the kitchen or hall will limit where he does pee but when you return be sure NOT to say anything as he will not link an angry mood to the puddle on the floor.

I have a chihuahua x westie dog, he is nearly 1 year 8 mths. He is absolutely adorable in everyway.. excellent with my children.. great nature... but is weeing everywhere!!
We've had him since 4mths and he always has been this way. He will wee outside, and has a corner he wees at. If I let him outside he will go, but indoors if he needs to go, he will wee up a chair, skirting board.. anything! I have never used a crate with any past dog.. and never wanted to, but now its as if I dont have a choice. If I go out at least I know where he has gone, rather than trying to find it! Most mornings he will have had a wee, if not pooed aswell, even after being let out at 11pm and waking at 6-7am.
I have never had this problem and think I will have to get a dog behaviourist in, as i'm running out of ideas!! With a 3 year old and 6mth baby.. it is becoming very difficult..all I want is for him to be part of the family!!! Any help/advice gratefully received!! THANKYOU!
