Just thought i would let you know my experience so you can judge for yourself.

I too was interested in having a parrot and loved them to pieces. How can you not when you see the soft cockatoo in the pet store thats asking for kisses and saying hello???

Now im not a novice bird keeper and my parents used to rescue several large parrots from the illegal pet trade so they had plenty of experience. When we moved they bought me my own parrot (i lived with them at the time and was only young) it was a small senegal parrot baby that was really soft. My parents showed me how to handle it, train it to step on the finger etc. My sister at the same time got a baby cockatiel. When this senegal hit teenager years it completely turned on me and never looked at me again. It fell in love with mum. We have it 6 years now and i have permenant scars from this little bird and yet he will do everything for mum. The cockatiel however turned out to be an amazing little bird, loved everybody and was so fussy it was unreal. Had far more fun with her then i ever did with the senegal.

I would like to eventually get a cockatoo but im talking in about 20 years time. At the moment i hand rear budgies which are the funniest birds ive had, they may be common but they are the most fun. we also do kakarikis and cockatiels and i thik i much prefere parakeets atm. As much as you love some birds, it is hard to sit there while this birds seeks you out to bite you in your own home! its really not a good idea for a first bird to have a screwed up large parrot at all. The rescue centres often get pet birds come through like budgies from people who have passed away, maybe a couple of budgies that come through would be a good option for you?

I have learnt far more keeping parakeets and have more experience of large parrots but wont jump into getting another in the near future at all! This is in no way a suggestion that you aren't capable but there is an awful lot more to them then meets the eye! i hope this helps and i wish you the best in your bird keeping future but start off with something that will love you back first!

hi, just wanted to agree with Ivydog and say that parrots are not a first time bird owners animal, i have always had small birds in my home and would not own a parrot or cockatoo because i dont feel i would be able to devote the time and effort or experience required for this type of bird, not only do they need more time but they cost a lot more money in terms of adequate housing, vets etc

Kelant1, I understand why you might want a parrot, but "I'll just love it until its better" though admirable is a bit unrealistic as parrots aren't like dogs or cats - some are loving, others downright difficult however much love you give them. You need to consider these things: (1) if you have no experience of parrots, the last thing you want is to take on an untame one, as I assume you want a pet; (2) no-one with any sense of responsibility would knowingly give an unwanted parrot to a complete novice, as it is likely to have "issues" of one sort or another that need experience more than love to fix, and you could do more harm than good (3) yes, they can be expensive to keep. If you are serious about getting started with birds, start with some baby budgies as they are easy to tame and keep and are just as much fun, and see if there are some parrot societies in your area: if you speak to experienced parrot people first before making the commitment you can understand what you are taking on, and find out the right kind of bird for you. By "experienced" I mean people who breed and raise them and are happy to pass on knowledge with no obligation to buy, not someone in a pet shop who will tell you anything to make the sale. Read as much as you can in books and the internet about the realities of keeping a parrot and why many end up in rescue. However, don't expect to get a bird for free or minimum cost - if you are offered one on these terms, it may be stolen goods or has some serious issues and you may be sorry in the long run.

Just one question. What happens if the bird gets ill and you end up with a £500 vet bill?
