I joined Parrotlinks and see they have a pionus forum. There are pictures of William the white capped there - is it the same bird?

The more I think about pionus the more I am thinking they are the right birds. I am not bothered about whether they will talk as I much prefer parrot chatter and am looking for the right temperament! Anyone out there rearing blue headed or maxis that I can make contact with?

i have a blue headed and a white capped pionus both males in the same cage i hand reared them myself and i cant find fault with either of them. pionus are not as loud as the larger parrots and with them being smaller they are easy to handle, both of mine can speak but they are not as clear as a grey or an amazon. pionus can get stressed and when stressed they tend to make a wheezing sound.

my brother has a white capped pionus, the smaller of the species, being only approx 9 inches where as the blue headed and the maxi being the larger of 11 to 11.5 inch. they are a very shy species and its normally advised to introduce pet birds to new people slowly as they stress easily, william (white cap) goes crazy when people he doesnt know enter his house. only making squeaking sounds and fluffing up. they make excellent pets but are not very common as they do not speak (not technically true william says hello not clearly but he says it and he does phone) this is why they arnt very common. they are a very affectionate species. william got on with my Galah (Candy)

In the string below you will see that I am looking for info on a suitable friend for a sun conure (but not another sun or jenday just in case of unwanted breeding). I was thinking of a quaker, but reading up I think that would be a bad idea. I want some real info on the pionus - blue headed or maximillian: can anyone tell me what a handreared one is like to live with - and would they get on with a different species (not in same cage unless they made friends). The sun is boisterous but loves everyone and is missing a parrot to talk to. Can anyone help, as I can't find any books on them...
